Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Orléans community has being a great supporter of the Food Bank at the Orléans-Cumberland Community Resource Centre (OCCRC). The last couple of weeks have been very demanding for our Food Bank but we are glad to share some positive aspects of the pandemic.
The OCCRC has received a major donation from Trim Sobeys that is going to help relief temporarily their food bank in this uncertain and difficult time. The Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager at the Trim Sobeys decided to donate back to the community part of their COVID-19 temporary salary increase. Thanks to the generosity of Trim Sobeys’ employees and customers, the Centre has received a donation of $10,001.95.
Another great news that is going to help the Orléans-Cumberland Food Bank is the Canley Cup Challenge from St. Peter Catholic High School. Every year, they assist the Centre with food and cash donations. This year, the school has taken the challenge online. Students have been creating videos and have been sharing them on social media. They have raised over $8,000 in just two weeks. The videos are an innovative way to keep youth engaged in the challenge but also informed about programs and services offered in their community. A great initiative on behalf of St. Peter’s Catholic High School.
“I was concerned that St. Peter Catholic High School would have to cancel their Canley Cup Challenge this year with everything surrounding the COVID-19. Each year, we are receiving approximately 40,000 food items and over $10,000 in donations to our Food Bank. Their food drive allows us to get through the summer into the fall. Without the Canley Cup Challenge, our food bank would be struggling to provide food to community members. When we learned that they were going to adjust the campaign, I was happy to hear the news because they support is invaluable to us.” Luc Ouellette, Executive Director of the Centre.
