The mumps are back!

News from the City of Ottawa
The incidence of mumps has been increasing throughout Canada in the past year, primarily among students attending colleges and universities. Outbreaks of mumps have occurred in four provinces, and infections may be on the rise in Ontario. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is implementing a free Mumps Catch-Up Vaccination Program for young adults, by offering a mumps-containing vaccine called MMR (Measles/Mumps/Rubella).  Schedules of Free Ottawa Public Health Clinics 2009 are available in PDF version.

People born in Ontario between 1970 and 1995 were likely offered only a single dose of MMR vaccine as a child. This means that most young adults in Ontario have received only one dose of the MMR vaccine, which may not provide enough protection. To be fully protected from contracting mumps, two doses are required.
